Materials Engineer

BHR Group is an independent industrial research, product development and consultancy company with expertise in fluid engineering. Our clients include major international companies worldwide, covering a broad range of industrial sectors including aerospace, energy and manufacturing. We work with our clients to solve engineering problems, implement new or improve existing systems.

The Opportunity and the Applicant

We have an opening for a design engineer with project manager experience, who has a background in Mechanical, Structural, Aeronautical, Renewable Energy, or Marine engineering.  Technically strong and commercially minded you will lead research and consultancy projects involving front end engineering design, simulation and testing within a multidisciplinary team.  You will have a strong knowledge of the mechanics of materials and possibly in fields such as friction, wear and lubrication (tribology), polymer materials, ageing and corrosion and high pressure high temperature (HPHT) fluid dynamics.  You will have already demonstrated your ability to apply your skills to a wide range of industrial processes.

The ideal candidate will be:

The ideal candidate will be:

• Experienced degree qualified engineer with a background in mechanical engineering and strong in tribology, materials and their interaction with fluids, who can demonstrate skills in both structural mechanics and fluid dynamics.

• Demonstrable experience and/or understanding of computational modelling techniques and the importance of validation of models and experimental testing would be a distinct advantage.

• Experience of proprietary engineering design tools, especially applied to offshore marine structures would be a distinct advantage.

• Engine testing or experience in the development of lubricants or lubricant additive packages for engines and/or transmission systems would be a distinct advantage but is not essential.

• Experience or a desire to work on engineering problems involving HPHT systems.

• Already have a proven track record with successfully managing technically complex projects.

• Experienced in building, managing and motivating project teams and relationships with clients.

• Able to work with industry recognised project management tools to assure its successful completion.

• Take corrective actions in projects and communicate progress at internal business level and with the client.

• A self starter with the potential to identify cost effective solutions to our clients problems.

• A good communicator, capable of explaining complex technical issues in simple terms.

• Able to organise themselves to prioritise competing targets.

• Enthusiastic and committed, with a can-do attitude, willing to work within tight schedules on his own or as part of a team.

The successful candidate will:

• Lead the design of structural, mechanical and fluid driven systems for renewable energy, fluid power, and research and product development projects.

• Lead projects involving prediction and improvement of the mechanical and physical behaviour of fluid-structural interactions for a wide range of industrial applications.

• Have a strong technical input to the development of models describing the coupled interaction of fluid and structural components and applying these to commercial code or spreadsheets calculations.

• Apply these skills to a variety of fluid engineering based industrial processes and undertake consultancy work including proposal writing and the presentation of papers at conferences.

• Lead and work in project teams that are developing test facilities to perform qualification of components and to generate data or validate mathematical models.

• Have the opportunity to build and lead small dedicated teams on cutting edge projects within the renewable energy, lubricants and nanotechnology sectors.

The role will involve:

• Developing new design methods based around the prediction and improvement of mechanical and physical behaviour of materials in a wide range of applications
• Developing models describing mechanical properties of materials and applying these to commercial code or spreadsheets
• Applying these to a variety of fluid engineering based industrial processes
• Performing research experiments to generate data or validate mathematical models
